Small Favorites

11:50 AM

It's been a little while, but it's all good. My fall has been busy, exciting, and spontaneous.

With so much going on, I'm finding joy in the little things. My Catbird ring makes me feel playful and a little spunky.

Not to mention, I love walking around with my retro inspired Kate Spade sunglasses because I finally got my prescription put in the lenses! It's been a simple joy to not have to wear contacts just for sunglasses.

And, I've been having a snarky and satisfying read with On Bullshit. Why not look at b.s. philosophically? :)

Pepper is my lovely, new rescue pup. She's a sweet little Pekingese, Shih Tzu, and Chihuahua mix. Her favorite activities include lounging in the park, getting treats, and chasing pesky pigeons. I'm excited to see how our woman and dog friendship blooms.

If you're considering adopting or fostering a dog, look at the network I rescued Pepper from: Stray From The Heart.

Three Poems Everyone Should Know

| On
4:34 PM

A beautiful thing about our world is that we have poetry in it. The following three poems have changed me in some profound or visceral way. And maybe, it'll change you to. Regardless, everyone should know these three poems. I keep reading "The Lovers" to myself over and over. I never tire.

"The Lovers" by Timothy Liu

I was always afraid
of the next card

the psychic would turn
over for us—

                           Forgive me
for not knowing
how we were

every card in the deck.

"Scheherazade" by Richard Siken

Tell me about the dream where we pull the bodies out of the lake
and dress them in warm clothes again.
How it was late, and no one could sleep, the horses running
until they forget that they are horses.
It’s not like a tree where the roots have to end somewhere,
         it’s more like a song on a policeman’s radio,
how we rolled up the carpet so we could dance, and the days
were bright red, and every time we kissed there was another apple
                                                                                       to slice into pieces.
Look at the light through the windowpane. That means it’s noon, that means
         we’re inconsolable.
Tell me how all this, and love too, will ruin us.
These, our bodies, possessed by light.
Tell me we’ll never get used to it.

"Sleeping in the Forest" by Mary Oliver

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

I'm beginning a love affair with dark metallic blue nail polish and it's the bee's knees. With a smooth application, the polish took a whole week for one chip to appear.

It's been a while since I've idly window shopped. So, why not a haul of pretty things that I'd love to materialize in my wardrobe? With summer and upcoming parties, vacations, new adventures, and a wedding or two, there's more than enough reason to shop. Or, so I tell myself.

Hello! I needed a change like yesterday, so I dyed my hair dark. What better way than to show it off with some hot pink lipstick? Badass vibes activated.

Poetry // Hotel Ghost

It's with great pleasure that I'm announcing my debut poetry chapbook, Hotel Ghost. It's such an honor to have my first small collection with Bottlecap Press. Poetry has been a wonderful art form for me, with its mysterious and yet concrete weaving possibilities.

Here is one of my favorite poems from the collection:

Field Notes

everything you say
can be condensed as gun fire.
a fleeting glimpse of a relationship
between
disaster & compromise.

Hotel Ghost is available for $6.

I Never Thought I'd Wear Pink Eyeshadow

7:30 PM

Eyes
  • Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette: Nooner and Limit
  • Benefit Yes, They're Real Mascara in Black
Skin

  • Missha BB Cream in Light
  • Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in RD 103
  • The Balm - The Luminizer
  • YSL Touche Eclat Radiance Touch - #2
Lips
  • Rimmel Lipstick in Mocha Cream, #690
I never thought I'd be using pink eyeshadow as a neutral, but here it is! It took me a while, but I became smitten with these two shades from the Naked 3 Palette and they're perfect for every day. I also like to add some smokey brown eyeliner for a stronger touch.

Not to mention, I'm currently having a moment with light brown and nude lipsticks, so the shadows become a perfect compliment.

Oh, yes, a Mini Haul // E.L.F

| On
11:12 AM

I do love a good beauty haul. On a day off, I spent some much needed time catching up with my lovely friend T. which included white wine, oysters, and the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop (amazingly delicious, go now).

We wandered into e.l.f. and I picked up concealer, lipstick, and some false lashes (not pictured) for less than $7! I'm very pleased with the lipstick because of its smooth, creamy texture and the pigment is opaque. I'm not too keen on lipsticks that look sheer when they shouldn't. I'm currently testing out the concealer palette, which is more light coverage. I'm hoping to try the darker shades for some light contouring.

Have you scored any beauty buys lately?

Slinky

2:38 PM

Who said wearing black has to be boring? Totally not true. I'm naturally drawn to black and I don't know if that makes me a fool or a genius. (Probably just a little lazy).

One of my favorite pieces to wear around is a sturdy leather jacket. Personally, I find moto jackets to be the stuff of miracles. Adding in a sleek-but-slinky dress and peep-toe booties relax the mood a little. I'm coveting this look and especially when it comes to adding little bits of lace, I couldn't help but adding in the Boohoo shorts for some sweetness. As for jewels & accessories, I like to offset all black with bright golds or sparkly silvers. In this case, a crystal encased with a bullet shell and a striking cuff take the cake. Lastly, the slightly pointy tips are retro-inspired and make me feel like I could've borrowed them from a long-lost Italian movie star aunt.

OZ Naturals' Super Youth Eye Gel

| On
8:54 PM

I received the OZ Naturals Super Youth Eye Gel a few weeks ago and I've been enjoying it ever since. I love the consistency of gels because they're not greasy and this product is so light and smooth on my skin. So, now I have a new eye gel in my rotation and here's the low down.

Again, the gel has a light finish and dries quickly. I'm particularly fond of products that don't dry tacky. This left my skin smooth and airy. With an infusion of plant oils and vitamin E, the product is weightless with a light cucumber scent. After testing the product for a few weeks, I've noticed a decrease in my dark circles. As for lines around my eyes, I'm more about preventing lines that getting rid of them at this stage in my beauty routine.

It is so light that end up spreading the product on my cheeks to further the strength of the product. I'm looking forward to seeing how the gel continues to work in the weeks to come.

Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Palette in Mocha Motion, Ardell False Eyelashes, & NYC Waterproof Eyeshadow Pencil in Rockefeller Center Snowflakes.

I'm having a moment with neutrals as of late. Browns, taupes, nudes. I can't get enough. This little baby eyeshadow palette is perfect from dark coffee and mocha shades to play around with. There's something about a brown smokey eye that feels a little femme fatale, just a little bad. Just a little cool as hell.

Ardell false eyelashes are my go-to drugstore brand because you can look seven shades of dope or just play it up with a more natural pair.

I'm excited to test out NYC's eyeshadow pencil for accents, highlighting, and my favorite trick: lining the inner corners of my eyes.

New & Old Favorites // Poketo Notebooks, Earring Jackets, Crystals, & Lotus Plants

| On
7:00 PM

...
Life isn't always about the glory of new things. Sure, I like shopping and the thrill of opening a new package like most of us. Lately, I've been craving ways to make use of all the lovely things I do have. And not mimic a reality tv hoarder. There are only three new goodies in this photo and the rest are in rotation.

Poketo notebooks // Can I just say that I love stationary? I'm a teacher, so I love the thrill of buying new school supplies each September. I gifted myself the Aloha Days planner for a new year and it's perfect for someone like me. There's no need for pages of blank weeks I missed because I'll only fill in the days I actually use. Not to mention, who doesn't want a notebook that tells you that you're awesome?

Lotus plant // My fiance gave me this gorgeous plant for Christmas from a little shop, Homecoming, in our neighborhood. I keep it on our bedroom window that fills some pretty glorious sunlight.

Bauble Bar Cairo Ear Jackets // I usually change up my jewelry quite often, but these earrings are definitely becoming part of my uniform. More often than not, I reach for them. I like how they a little art deco and a little bit punky.

Chloe Eau de Parfum // I have an obscene or substantial collection of make up samples that take me three days short of forever to get through. I finally started usually this light but sharp scent.

MAC Clear Lipglass // I've been wearing this since I was sixteen and I don't predict a change anytime soon.

Chromosphere Quartz Pendant // This gorge and witchy pendant has been in my wardrobe rotation for a year now. I don't think I'm going to ease up on my magical infused touches as of late.
